"An extremely harmful book that undermines the foundations of social and governmental institutions and wholly destroys the teaching of the church." -Moscow Civil Censorship Committee.
This refers to the Leo Tolstoy book "What I believe".
I am reading Tolstoy's book "The Kingdom of God is within You" which is basically a commentary of his responses to the stir that "What I believe" produced. Needless to say...it's a barn burner.
Here is a quote:
"But Christ could not have founded the Church, that is, what we now understand by that word. For nothing like that idea of the Church as we know it now, with its sacraments, miracles, and above all its claim of infallibility, is to be found either in Christ's words or in the ideas of the men of that time."
Here is a link to the table of contents...read it, you can get the picture as to why it's controversial to say the least.
You can also read it online there as well. (http://www.kingdomnow.org/withinyou.html )
It's a must for anyone looking at the issues of peace, non-resistance and war.
